Urine toxic elements analysis is an invaluable tool for the assessment of retention of recent toxic metal exposures in the body. Typically urine toxic elements analysis will demonstrate exposures within the past 2-3 days. Toxic metals do not have any useful physiological function, adversely affect virtually every organ system and disrupt the homeostasis of nutrient elements.
Analysis of the levels of toxic metals in urine is an objective way to evaluate the accumulation of toxic metals, especially when used in conjunction with a chelating agent. Acute metal poisoning is rare. More common, however, is a chronic, low-level exposure to toxic metals that can result in significant retention in the body that can be associated with a vast array of adverse health effects and chronic disease. One cannot draw valid conclusions about adverse health effects of metals without assessing net retention. For an individual, toxicity occurs when net retention exceeds physiological tolerance. Net retention is determined best by doing a two urine collections. First, a single urine sample before taking a provoking agent, and a 24 hour urine colletion after the provoking agent is taken.
Variability in urine volume can drastically affect the concentration of elements. To compensate for urine dilution variation, a give a more accurate result, elements are expressed per unit creatinine for timed collections. A urine sample is collected over a 24 hour period and sent in a pre-paid mailer. For long term body burden of toxic metals such as 1-2 months or more, you may consider a hair toxic metals analysis. You will receive your results with a report by e-mail within about a week.see sample report
